Who's your personal hero? As a children's entertainer, Sesame Street's BIG BIRD & OSCAR are tops! What an honour to present Mr. Caroll Spinney with balloons of his two beloved characters, and to thank our childhood influence for his legacy. At 86, this was his final Canadian appearance, and though he needed assistance from his wife Debbie (they've been married since the 1960s, still obviously very much in love- "true flower children!" his agent said), you'll be happy to hear his spirit, and joyous wit, are both still strong. The light and love he showed us on Sesame Street for over 50 years (!) shined through, as he instantly went into Big Bird's actual voice when seeing the balloon gift: "Ohhh! What a wonderful balloon!!" (Again, imagine, hearing this, as I did, in BIG BIRD's voice!) Then, he looked at his Oscar balloon, and started talking in the voice of our favourite garbage lover: "Heeeeey, y'know...if I stuck a PIN in 'dat balloon...I could make some TRASH! Heh, heh, heh..." So, here were the exact voices of so much of our childhood...coming directly from the source, the man himself! (Can you imagine the joy??) I then learned his Dad was from New Brunswick, and thanked him especially for his Big Bird performance on the episode dealing with Mr. Hooper's death. Caroll was grateful, and replied that this was actually his personal favourite work he ever did. A lady nearby (Cathy) added that she lost her Grandfather shortly after this episode aired, and seeing Big Bird go through the healing process after a death helped her immensely. After talking and reminiscing, I did some magic tricks for Mr. Spinney, in gratitude. Having him laugh and say "Delightful!" was more than enough thanks, but then he gave me the ultimate gift...an actual yellow FEATHER...from his Big Bird costume. (!) Sigh. A treasure to cherish. Again, who is YOUR lifelong hero? Whether it be a parent, teacher, or creative artist, remember to take the time to THANK them. It feels so good. Time may eventually take us all, but LOVE lives forever. Big Bird taught us that. :) ... See MoreSee Less
Ever have an experience you wish would last forever? Under a sunny Scotia sky, amidst a sea of super-silly scarecrows (!), Mahone Bay's Annual Festival echoed with laughter in mayhaps Mr. J's merriest magic show ever! The awesome audience was so wildly enthused, even the scarecrows likely heard them! (Such a beautiful area too, if you ever get the chance to go yourself). Received this wonderful e-mail afterward from a fellow entertainer: "I was visiting the Scarecrow fest and heard your voice, then said to my friend...that's gotta be Mr. J...and so it was! You owned everyone there today; so excited to see you perform. My friend Sais saw how you welcomed every child over time to the stage so they could perform too. Thank you so much." -Mary Ayer (Clown) ... See MoreSee Less
